Delusions of certainty

I transform vintage maps of Europe, Africa, and the Americas, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, to reveal the complex interplay of permanence and memory. Cutting out the maps’ roadways with meticulous precision, Middelmann envisions these roads as the “Bloodlines” of existence, where land hovers like an organic tapestry woven out of both life and loss. Challenging the scientific objectivism of maps, Middelmann’s series reveals the fragmentation of place through the permeating contexts of migration and change.  "The layering of thread or maps in my work, and the transparency of the material gives my work a spatial and temporal depth, rendering diverse images and impressions that can only arise with the active participation of the spectator as the viewer changes their vantage point. The maps become tactile sculptures taking on organic forms"

This work was shown at the Westbeth art center in New York, Post Collapse gallery in Zurich, the art center in Zug, the Regionale 23 in Germany as well as in other institutions.

The sewn maps will be shown at the Woman Made Gallery in the USA, Zisa in Palermo, and Museo del Fiume in Rome in 2026
