Delusions of certainty

I transform vintage maps of Europe, Africa, and the Americas, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, to reveal the complex interplay of permanence and memory. Cutting out the maps’ roadways with meticulous precision, Middelmann envisions these roads as the “Bloodlines” of existence, where land hovers like an organic tapestry woven out of both life and loss. Challenging the scientific objectivism of maps, Middelmann’s series reveals the fragmentation of place through the permeating contexts of migration and loss.

This work was shown at the Westbeth art center in New York, Post Collapse gallery in Zurich, the art center in Zug, the Regionale 23 in Germany as well as in other institutions
